<description> The Golden Age from My Barbarian.

A post-colonial fantasy.
Drunken, cross-dressing sailors, a Dutch-speaking sea gull puppet, sequined Mer-men, wet underwear contest, and the unresolved trauma of slavery – all in one fun-filled spectacular!

<description>The Dance Witches Dance performance was made especially for the show in Het Domein in Sittard and travelled on to the Luckman Gallery in Los Angeles. Lara Schnitger played the artist who sells her soul to the 3 witches (My Barbarian) in exchange for her works to come to life. The performance takes place in the gallery space around three giant sculptures. Each sculpture depicts a woman with all her powers, drawn into a witchy web.

"The Only One" is the first video collaboration by Lara Schnitger and My Barbarian. The film was shot in the screening room of Liberace's old house in the Hollywood Hills. Patterned couches, a small stage, and the screen became the backdrop of an interaction in which actors become sculptures and sculptures come alive. Inspired by a soft porn Japanese photo novel, Lycra fetish web sites and sculptural actions out of my studio, we started to play and improvise. They merge the fabric from costumes into sculpture and their own skin.

Emotional spaces.

According to Osvaldo Sanchez, Matthias Goeritz had an “open understanding of the concept
of collective authorship,” was “indifferent to ... personal style,” had an “interest in ordinary
materials,” and “a commitment to the primacy of the natural environment as the ideal context for
all aesthetic experiences.” Our project reflects upon these precepts to realize
Goeritz’s stated intention that El Eco would be “a meeting point to experience artistic creation
freely and convivially. It would be an open and transformable space: experimental museum, art
gallery, theater, dance space...which, under it’s roof, would integrate art, artists, visitors, and work. It would be a museum, a living museum.” Our collective effort’s aim is to echo Goeritz’s “emotional architecture” while exploring the history, and various uses and legacies, of the site since its inauguration September 7, 1953.

		<description>

In 2008, during a residency at the New Museum, My Barbarian developed the Post-Living Ante-Action Theater (PoLAAT). The project was envisioned as a pedagogical model and (self-consciously) codified technique that would become a way to work with a large group of artists in creating a theatrical process of artistic collaboration as about grappling with the history of radical leftist theatrical and artistic production. Using historical models such as the Living Theater, Fassbinder's anti-theater, and Theater of the Oppressed, the PoLAAT workshop facilitates group-building, cultural exchange and political critique through imaginative reenactments. <description>The culmination of a month long residency during which My Barbarian shot footage of the museum workers installing the 30th Anniversary show. Footage of the installation process was edited together to create a video piece projected on the wall outside the museum's entrance. My Barbarian also interviewed staff members from every echelon of the institution. The series of questions investigated the psychological and emotional impact the museum's recent financial crisis had on the staff.

During the event, chorographer Hana Van Der Kolk and dancers performed progressions based on observations of the party-goers' behavior and acting students enacted an adaptation of Augusto Boal's "Invisible Theatre" in strategic places amongst the crowd. My Barbarian created the scripts by compiling, transcribing, and editing the MOCA employees' interviews. “What is the museum’s responsibility to the public?” “What does this collection say about art history?” “Have you ever cried at work?” The scenes, performed while the actors stood in long drink lines, provoked dialogue and participation.

A live feed filmed multiple DJs and dancers in a downstairs auditorium. Their images were projected upstairs in the courtyard. As a culminating action, My Barbarian and the group of 20 actors and dancers performed a final musical spectacule wearing elaborate handmade shimmery, semi-transparent costumes inspired by the 1970s space soul group La Belle.

The Broke People's Baroque Peoples' Theater engages questions of economic inequity, artistic patronage, and a culture of excess (or excess of culture). It is: obsessed with classical allusion, doomed to camp, adorned in costume, engaged in masquerade and surrounded by sculpture. With a queer attitude toward cheap materials, the Broke People's Baroque People's Theater decorates itself in a hyper-feminine aestheticism to undermine class(y) distinctions of taste. A wealth of poverty, the chintzy is rich.

Lyrics of the Broke People's Baroque Peoples' Theater

Gods of Play
Artistic innovation
Patronized by royal advisors
Wasteful spending
In a time of distraction and war
Gods of Play
Artificial dolphins spitting plumes of aqua in fake island fountains
Infrastructure crumbles
As the pleasure palace rises
Admirers encounter all the nobles’ clothes
In Rome, Il Castrati sing the great sopranos
In Madrid, Las Majas play the tragic heroes
A succession of monarchs and economic disasters
Taxation of workers but not their masters
Violence!
The view from above is the best seat in the house
Such a different time - I’m just sayin’
From 1580-1680, roughly
The Baroque broke out in a rash of golden ages
From Italy to France to Austria to Holland to Spain
Also, Vilnius, Lithuania
Catholicism rebranded
In a flurry of curly golden scrambled eggs
Which are inedible
Such a different time
I’m just sayin’

Five Seasons
Spring - it doesn't matter if you have money when you are young and healthy and gay
Autumn - enough to buy coffee, but you have to wear three sweaters under your blanket in your apartment at night
Summer -upward mobility means having a friend who has a swimming pool
Fall - it's all over now, they are coming, your debts will be paid, one way or another now
your debts will be paid, one way or another now
Winter - you almost died but you stayed alive because the envelope arrived just in time

Artisan’s Lament
The palace that I designed you
From dreams that at one time were mine
My plans drawn in lines
That bind me, entwine me, remind me
That buildings are structures which crumble
As pencil pressed firmly will break
And if you paid me ten thousand pounds a year
I could never afford to live here
And though I chose all the décor, my dear
I will never sit in this chair
From this chair
You watch the entertainments
A royal ballet composed of my dreams
Choreography
Offers only sad hints
Of a life I can never redeem
And if you paid me a million coins so rare
It would never allay my fear
You could replace me by this time next year
Why must I make my art
To serve you and your class?
I should use all my skill
To empower the mass
But those people from below
What the hell do they know
About art?
All these things that I resent
It is the artisan’s lament

 I, Object
i
object
you incorporate
bodies
monies
i
object
you don't own me
even though you bought me
you want to return me
but you don't own me
you don't own
me
i
object
on table
or pedestal
you want to show me off
even though it was you
who lost the receipt
i
object
you incorporate
bodies
monies

Lyrics by Alexandro Segade, 2010-12
